We know that how many types of communication: verbal, nonverbal, written.
If we don’t communicate efficiently, we put ourselves and others at risk. Also, physical and technical barriers.
Let discuss the barriers to effective communication every employee and manager should attempt to eliminate.
Dissatisfaction With his/her Job
If you are unsatisfied or you have lost interest in your job, you may be likely to connect efficiently – both on the giving and receiving ends.
In other words, your emotion isn’t in it. This barrier is maybe the most problematic to overcome because it involves changing a mindset, and therefore it typically doesn’t change until the person leaves.
Inability to Listen to Others
Active listening is the most important aspect of effective communication. You cannot involve with somebody if you are not listening to them because you will have a tendency to make assumptions about their needs based on your perceptions as against reality.
Lack of Transparency & Trust
It is very difficult to connect anything when there is a lack of transparency and trust. For example, if your staff have confidence in you are holding something back, they will be worried, some will take risks, and as an outcome, it will be more difficult for them to process any attempt you make to connect with them.
Communication Styles (when they differ)
Every person has their particular communication style. Some people are very straight, while others prefer a more indirect approach.
Some use detailed data, while others depend on simplifications, and so forth. Rarely, one person is so deep-rooted in their way of communicating, they find it difficult to communicate with others who depend on a different style.
You might hear comments such as, “Mary never clarifies what she needs me to do, she’s never specific”
Conflicts in the Workplace
Conflict can happen for a variety of reasons, and when it happens, it becomes a barrier to effective communication.
The nature of the conflict is not certainly important, what is important is working to resolve the conflict. When conflict is not eliminated, it grows and then people begin to take sides, which further hampers effective communication.
Cultural Differences & Language
It is important to understand the cultural changes in communication. But don’t just think global as in remembering that in Japan one person surname comes first their given name.
There can also be regional changes when any person does not know cultural differences. We should have to actively involved in reflecting on our own communication skills.
The above list of communication barriers is a great place to start. Reflection, empathy (putting yourself into the other’s shoes), and repetition will help you improve your skills.
Though no one is perfect, so it is also important to identify and admit when you make a mistake which is the first step to effective communication.
